The Start of Sue's* Foster Care Journey

When Sue* was just five years old, she entered foster care after circumstances made it unsafe for her to remain at home. Sue's journey was far from an easy one. Developmental challenges made it difficult for her to communicate her needs and emotions. At school and with her foster family, her feelings of frustration would sometimes surface through challenging behaviours, leaving those around her struggling to understand her.

Supporting Sue required patience, perseverance and teamwork. Her foster family, the Boys’ Town Fostering Services’ (BTFS) team, and teachers often had to navigate unpredictable emotions and behaviours while searching for ways to help her express herself. Though the road was demanding, they never gave up on her. They held on to the belief that, with stability, support and time, Sue could thrive.

Care That Meets Her Where She Is

Sue's foster care worker invested time in building trust and discovering ways for her to communicate beyond words. Through play therapy, gentle guidance and consistent support, Sue was given the space to feel seen, heard and valued.

A counsellor from Boys' Town's Clinical Intervention Centre (CIC) was also engaged to support her development. Working closely with Sue throughout her growing years, the counsellor helped her strengthen her emotional regulation, build resilience and develop important life skills.

Slowly, but Surely

Gradually, Sue began participating more actively in school and daily activities. She was more willing to try new experiences and showed greater confidence in situations she had once avoided. Her determination and "never give up" spirit continue to inspire those around her.

While there are still challenges, Sue's progress is a testament to the power of consistent care, encouragement and belief in a child's potential. She is learning to express herself, accept support and face new experiences with confidence.

For her foster family, the greatest reward lies in witnessing these small but meaningful milestones. Watching Sue blossom reminds them that every challenge, every step forward and every moment of patience has been worth it.
